Stray Cat

Tonight has been an interesting night. It all started a week ago when a neighbor came frantically to our door looking for her cat. She was so upset and came around again with fliers. Well, this had a huge impact on Natalie. She felt so bad for the lady and the cat that she even woke up in the middle of the night and came in our room about it. She said, “Daddy, can you please take me back to bed and pray for Sophie (the cat)?”

So, tonight we had our windows open and we hear this cat outside our window. It just kept meowing and would not go away. At first glance it looked just like Sophie’s picture on the flier. So, I went outside and calmly talked to the cat to get her to come closer and take a better look. I compared it to the flier over and over. Well, the cat got more comfortable and started doing the whole rubbing up against me for attention. So, Natalie and I sat outside for a while petting the cat. I did eventually decide it was not Sophie afterall. But because the cat was so starved for attention, I continued to pet it. Well, would you believe…all the sudden the crazy thing BIT me! Totally out of the blue! We quickly got up and went inside to wash it and put peroxide on it.

A couple of hours later and several phone calls, I was very close to going to the emergency room (mostly because I am pregnant and because it was a stray). Especially after speaking to the Dr that was on-call for my OB-GYN. Who was hilarious by the way! At one point he said, “Too bad your husband didn’t have a gun. If some cat bit my wife, I’d shoot it and then call animal services to check for rabies.” At another point, he asked which Hospital was closest to me. I told him and then said, “But I’m not a big fan of that one.” To which he replied, “Well, it’s not like you need a brain surgeon.”

I decide to call Animal Services and report it. Then, I am seeing on medical websites, that once a human shows symptoms of rabies, then there is nothing you can do. You die. (Oh the joys of information at our fingertips). I start thinking maybe I should go to the ER like the OB said, just to be safe.

Amazingly, Praise the Lord, animal services came to our door. The lady that helped us was so nice! Turns out, when I walked her outside to show her our neighbors’ vacant house, THERE WAS THE CAT! YAY! Animal services told me it was my lucky day and put the trap up right then. About 20 minutes later, the cat was trapped in the cage.

This is a huge answer to prayer! Now they can quarantine the cat and make sure it doesn’t have rabies. Otherwise, I would’ve had to get 5 shots of vaccinations as a precautionary measure. Not to mention the expense and time of a trip to the ER. I SO did not want to have to go through all of that!

So, the moral to the story, don’t mess with stray animals! I’ll certainly never do that again!

Almost A Month

It has been almost a month since I have written on here. There has been a lot going on. Instead of writing about it all, I figured I would just highlight the main points and direct you to my flickr page of our life in pictures. So, here are the highlights:

~ Celebrated Jason’s Birthday in New York City!
~ I went to the Women’s Retreat for our church at the beach!
~ Celebrated my Birthday at Jimmy Buffet’s restaurant and then also at Bucca di Beppo!
~ And celebrated our Wedding Anniversary – 8 years!
~ I also have been getting adjusted to life as a parent of a kindergarten girl! I have to remember to do homework again. And this week she had 6 worksheets and a journal project with Curious George!
~ I went with Natalie’s class to participate in One Great Day of Service.
~ Healthwise, the Dr discovered I have a cyst on my right ovary. It causes me lots of pain at times and it has completely messed up my cycle (let’s just say Aunt Flo did not visit this month)!

So, life has been a whirlwind! I am very thankful for all our celebrations. So stop by flickr and see all the fun.

That is what we heard at about midnight last night! It was from the rat trap we set up just 30 minutes before, when we went to bed. I couldn’t believe it! I think there was an aspect of me that wondered if we would really ever catch it.

So, there we were in bed. I, of course, not sleeping because I am still coughing up my lungs. I was laying there praying that God would please take this cough away and was about to drift off, when…schnaapp! Jason and I quickly got out of bed to go see if it really did work. He was indeed in the trap! Let me just tell you…that was not a pretty picture! We did take a picture of it, but I am just not sure you all would like to see that! Am I right?

Another Unwanted Guest

That’s right, my friends. This time it is not a snake, but a RODENT! At least that is what we suspect and let me tell you why.

I have been sleeping a couple of times in Natalie’s room (yes, that’s what happens when Jason and I are fighting!) 🙂 Just kidding. Actually, Natalie has been really sick with her belly this week. I was going to write about that and post the over-dramatic happenings of the child, but unfortunately I came down with a cold and didn’t get much of anything done! Let’s just say the girl does not handle pain well at all! So, anyway, there have been a couple of nights that she was so miserable that we had her come in our bed with us. But then, I couldn’t sleep with her in there, so I went to sleep in her bed.

The first night, I was asleep in her bed and awoke suddenly to what I thought was a knock on her window. I, of course, flipped out, went to wake up Jason, and we searched around trying to figure out where it came from. I told him, then, that I thought maybe it was coming from something in the wall. He assured me that wouldn’t be possible since there are 2x4s in the wall. So, I went on back to sleep.

Well, last night, I was in there again and realized very quickly that it had to be a creature in the wall! I just kept hearing scratching and various noises on and off. This was all at 4:30 in the morning, mind you! It was disturbing this time and I couldn’t go back to sleep. Especially with a potential creature right next to my head. So, I moved out to the couch and did manage to get back to sleep.

We were in a mad rush for church this morning (due to the lack of sleep – ho, who am I kidding…we are always late to church), and didn’t pay much attention to anything. When we got home and were making lunch, I noticed about a 1/4 of a banana eaten and gnawed at! We also noticed lovely shavings of particle board under one of our kitchen cabinets! The thing had dug its way through and came right in our kitchen and helped himself! Yikes!

So, what to do now?! The thing has obviously found food and will come back for more. Jason is going to buy some sort of trap tonight and place it by his little hole. Hopefully it will work. Although, I am not sure I want to be the one to discover if it did work, if you know what I mean! Hopefully I can sleep well tonight knowing there is a critter trying to make residence in our home!

We Have Entered Mini-Van World!

Yes, that’s right! We entered mini-van world this week.

God provided just the right one for us and within our price range! Which I must say was difficult to do! (But not too difficult for God)

You know, we have only had it a couple of days, and I must say I really like the mini-van! Here are some reasons why:

~It’s much cooler then the family one I drove as a teenager!

~I especially love the power sliding door feature! It really is fun to walk to the car and open it with the click of a button.

~We really like that the model we have has passenger windows that roll down.

~The gas mileage is better than an SUV. And let’s face it…it’s hard to not think about that factor with gas at $3 a gallon!

~I also love all the space! At first, I didn’t think we would need it. But it really is nice. And I am sure we will appreciate the space even more when we carry other people with us.

Thanks for all your input when we were making the decision! Sorry to disappoint you, Kristin, by entering minivan world! 🙂

The Exploder is No Longer

The last I wrote was about all the fun stuff we did over Christmas Holidays. Well, one thing I didn’t mention yet is that the day right after Christmas, Jason’s Explorer (or Exploder as we affectionately call it) bit the dust. Jason says that I broke it because I was driving it with Natalie from the Mall. 🙂 But we all know the thing was on it’s last leg – it was a 1992 with 230,000 miles on it! I mean, seriously!

So, it has been real fun lately trying to figure out what to do next (I say that sarcastically). We have been all over the gamut of various options, I have test drove probably over 10 cars in the past couple of weeks, and read so many reviews on the web, that I am about to go crazy! We started out thinking we would probably get a minivan, then we saw some pretty cool crossovers and mini-suv vehicles, that we started trying those. Now, keep in mind that we aren’t getting anything new, so we pretty much have to check inventory for all of Orlando to see if they have the one we want to test-drive.

What gets me is these crazy sales people that think just because you came in to check something out, and drove it for 5 minutes, that you are ready to take their offer! I mean, come on! I explained to one guy, that I pretty much research everything before I buy it all the way down to foods and make-up, and that I am in the very beginning stages of figuring all this out. And boy, do I really feel like it! Sometimes I feel like I haven’t even made any progress! Especially when you get on Consumer Guide or Edmunds and read reviews, then you feel like there must not be anything quality or reliable out there! And then you add in the kid factor! My goodness! If there is ever a time to see their bad behavior come out…it has been while test-driving vehicles! I have decided that Nicholas is a typical boy. All he wants to do is touch every button or gadget possible (over and over)! And then the arguing! Wow!

So, I think we have narrowed it down to like 8 possibilities that fit within our criteria (basically a larger vehicle that could haul friends and family with us, so a 3rd row seat, reliability, quality, and good gas mileage)- Now, some of these are in our dreams because they are more expensive than our budget, but what do you think?
Toyota Highlander
Toyota Sienna
Honda Pilot
Honda Odyssey
Buick Rendezvous
Hyundai Entourage
Hyundai Santa Fe
Ford Freestyle

Would you believe, that reading the reviews on these show issues on all of them! I was completely surprised by that on the Toyota and Honda! So, I don’t know what to think. I welcome any suggestions or ideas.

The Holidays at our House

So the Holidays at our house were busier than I anticipated. You see, I still am in the thought process of the Holidays meaning lots of down time, relaxing, catching up on projects, etc. Well, as I told a friend yesterday, I think those days are over now that we have kids. Three and four year olds don’t really like to sit around! And if we did plan to sit around…they would drive me insane with their fighting picking at each other, so we might as well get out and do fun stuff together. So, here are some of the fun things we did in the last few weeks (click on the pic for a larger view):
We went ice-skating. The kids loved it!

My brother took us to Disney World – Thanks Scott! We had such a great time! (That’s my niece with us)

Natalie sang at school in a Christmas program.

We went to Celebration and played in the fake snow. We do that every year…it’s really fun. We also go to see Santa, but this year they increased the price to $21 for a picture with him!

Then there was our actual Christmas celebrations –

in the ocean
Yes..they were in the ocean two days before Christmas! That’s Christmas in Florida for you!

Then after Christmas we went Camping. That’s right…I went camping! We have never been together as a family, and I pretty much said that I would never go. So, this was a big deal. I must say…it was really fun! I will definitely bring an air mattress next time, as sleeping on the hard ground was not fun at all! One fun thing was sitting around the campfire. I told Natalie that people usually tell ghost stories. So, in the interest of not freaking the kids out, we told simple mild stories and didn’t even mention a ghost. But Natalie, in every story, she would say something like, “Then the ghost would come and eat them all up!” It was hilarious!

Jason’s parents came to visit. We had a great time with them. One of the days we went to Seaworld.

So that was our Holiday! It was lots of fun! What all did you do for the Holidays?
