We went to the beach for a little vacation this past week. Just wanted to share a few of the highlights.

A few weeks ago, Natalie had a pimple on her face. So, today she is looking in the mirror and says, “Mommy, where is that thing I have on my face, that you have on your face?”
After trying to figure out what she is talking about, I say, “Oh, a pimple.” (which is great for the self-esteem that your daughter points out your pimples!) And then I tell her, “Well, yours is gone honey. They come and go.”
And then here’s the real kicker! She says, “But yours aren’t gone.”
We have been at the beach this week with Jason’s family. I just wanted to drop a note real quick here and share with you all what we were able to experience today.
The kids and I were walking down the beach to just take a stroll and explore. Well, did we ever have an experience! We were able to witness several little turtles who had hatched from their eggs make their way down to the beach. Oh my goodness…it was the sweetest thing!
They were so cute and so little! Just waddling their way on down to the water. We were right in the midst of them. In fact, one even touched my foot! I think what was so amazing to me, is the fact that they emerge from their shells and instinctively know right where they need to go! And once they get there, they know how to start swimming. Sometimes it was sad to watch one of them work so hard to get to the water, and a wave would come up and thrust it right back on to the sand again. And it would have to make the trek all over again.
The kids were just as amazed! Natalie even said that she wished we could pick one up and take it home. We were so thankful to have been able to witness it all! Especially since most of the time, hatching occurs at night. Unfortunately I did not have my camera, and even if I did have it in my bag, there may not have been enough time to capture it because those little guys were running as fast as they could. I did manage to find a few pictures on-line and wanted to at least post those here. This is truly what it looked like with like 20-30 turtles swarming to the ocean!
I thought I would document and give you all an update on what is going on in our house.
~ For starters, someone in our house has been sick for the past 3 weeks! Mine just started last week. The crazy thing is that this blasted GERM does not go away easily! There have been sore throats, coughs, congestion, pink eyes, and many nights of disturbed sleep. Poor Jason thought his was getting better, only to find himself coughing a lung up again at 3:00 in the morning last night.
~ Then there is sweet Nicholas. We just found out that he is allergic to eggs (surprise, surprise. so is the rest of his family) and he is allergic to garlic. That’s right…GARLIC! Do you realize how hard it is to avoid that one?! Oh my stars, it’s in everything! I even discovered it is in the spice containers of chili powder.
~ Making dinner tonight while avoiding GARLIC was quite a challenge. I was very excited to find a bottle of chili powder without garlic in it at the store. So, I make up all of my sauce for some chicken burritos tonight. I decide to taste it before adding chicken, and WOW! Can you say, “FIRE!” My mouth was on FIRE! I decided to recheck this new chili powder only to find it was Chipotle Chili PEPPER! Oh dear! Thank goodness I discovered it before making up all those burritos and serving them to my unsuspecting kiddos! So, yes, I did start all over. And, needless to say, I did not use any chili powder or Chili PEPPER. 🙂
~ Then, there is the lingering issue of Nicholas’ growth concern. To catch you up to speed, he is not growing much or gaining any weight. Drs have been concerned, so we did some blood work. That showed that he is deficient in IGF-1 hormone. Meaning that there is either not enough growth hormone being produced or there is, but because he does not have enough IGF-1, it does not travel to the rest of his body. So, now there is the lingering question of how we will proceed from here. Please pray for us if you think of it. And if you know of anyone that has dealt with this before, then please let me know. Especially if they approached it from an alternative standpoint.
So, lots Happening in the Howell Household! Thanks for listening (reading). 🙂
A while ago we went to Cypress Gardens. (wow…I can’t believe it has been that long ago! It’s a whirlwind, I tell you. A whirlwind!) Anyway, Cypress Gardens was so fun! I didn’t know the place was that fun! We are even considering getting passes there for next year because it costs the same to get a pass there for the whole year as it does to go to Disney for one day!
If you don’t know much about it, let me just tell you it is more than just a Botanical Garden. Back in 2004 they added lots of ride and coasters. And there are LOTS! We didn’t even ride it all. They also have a splash park with water slides. That was really fun.
Another really fun thing was having my mom there with us. She had been there, herself, as a little girl back in the 40’s or 50’s! It was fun to envision her sitting there on the grassy hill watching the water ski show, a similar show to what we were watching (only now they have stadium seating).
Check out this video of us riding a roller coaster! Watching the kids cracks me up!

So, I was just told about this website called Kids in Mind – Visit Kids-in-Mind
It is a great site for helping to discern the appropriateness of movies. It gives great detail for each movie with categories like sex/nudity, violence, profanity. I tell you, it was amazing to see what all we are exposed to in detailed form. But when you watch the movie, it’s easy to dismiss those things because you are caught up in the movie and gloss over it. So, reading these reviews will definitely help me to determine what we allow ourselves to be exposed to, and if we do, how to address it with our kids with what they watch.
So go check it out and let me know what you think.
